Saving Abused and Neglected Dogs

Nine o’clock in the morning and it was already -20C as we drove to the public shelter in a town in rural Romania. At least we knew that the 800 strays and abandoned pets caged there would eat well today, thanks to the bags of food we had stashed in the boot. We passed cage after cage filled with dogs of all ages blasted by the biting wind; half-hidden inside holes they had dug in the snow just to survive. That's when we saw Ivy, silent in her pain, too cold to show fear when we approached. She was heavier than she looked, weighed down by heavy clumps of matted fur, and her poor paws had frozen solid.

This is reality for dogs in Romania and Moldova. The lack of neutering has led to a huge stray population and the starving dogs scavenge before being rounded and taken to “shelters'' to be killed. Our commitment to helping neglected dogs means that we are constantly facilitating the rescue of dogs from both these inhumane shelters and the streets. Collectively, our rescuers have up to 3,000 animals in their care at any one time and we support them by fundraising to cover the cost of vet treatment, food, bedding and shelter. Thanks to our team, thousands of dogs like Ivy are now warm, fed and no longer in pain. For dogs like her, the days of frozen paws and empty bellies are over.

We’re More Than A Re- homing Charity

Finding loving homes in the UK for neglected dogs is so rewarding, but it’s only a small part of what we do. Providing neutering services is at the heart of our mission as we work towards our ultimate goal of ensuring every dog is a wanted dog. Currently, we run extensive neuter campaigns in Ukraine, Peru, Columbia, and particularly the rural communities in Romania and we are grateful for the support of Battersea Dog’s Home in this. Thousands - potentially millions - of pups have not been born into misery because we dedicate our time and resources to neutering programmes. Each year, our vet scholarships enable young people to train in Veterinary Medicine at college or university in Romania. These student vets participate in our regional campaigns and in global research projects such as ways to combat Brucellosis Canis – a devastating canine disease.

Our vet scholars are also involved in our most ambitious project to date: Medical Centre for Education and Animal Services. The clinic provides the only veterinary care in the region and we plan to expand the education programme we have already rolled out across seven counties in Romania. This unique project is the first of its kind in Romania and we are very proud of the desperately needed facilities it provides. Our Sacred Heart Sanctuary also opened this year. Sadly, some of our dogs are too traumatised to be rehomed, and the Sanctuary provides a secure and comfortable environment for these animals.

As well as the sanctuary and medical centre, our efforts are focused on funding other vital projects. Prepare for Winter is an annual campaign that starts in the summer. Donations raised are specifically held until the colder months when temperatures in Romania can drop below -25C and snow drifts pile to 8 feet or more. Every year, we are able to help up to fifty small rescuers and individuals who cry out for help for shelter, straw and food. This campaign is a literal lifesaver for so many animals. We also run an annual Christmas gift appeal for children living in poverty in Romania, providing much-needed warm clothes, school equipment, toiletries and toys. Alongside our education programme, this hugely successful initiative helps the next generation to develop compassion for animals.

We are passionate about what we do, but we can’t do it alone. That’s why we’re so grateful for the kindness of our supporters, many of whom are members of our adopters and fosterers family, who believe in our goal of making every animal a wanted animal.
